What Our Patients Have Taught Us About Healing: 5 Lessons from 2 Years in Direct Endocrine Care

Two years ago, we made a bold decision: to step away from the traditional insurance-based healthcare model and launch a Direct Specialty Care practice focused solely on what matters most—you, the patient.

We didn’t know exactly what to expect, but what we’ve learned since then has transformed the way we approach endocrinology, wellness, and healing.

In honor of our two-year anniversary, I want to share five of the most important lessons we’ve learned—and how they’re helping us serve our patients better every day.

Section 1 - 40%

1. Healing Starts with Feeling Seen and Heard

Time and time again, our patients tell us how relieved they feel after their first appointment—not just because they got answers, but because they felt truly seen, heard, and supported.  Many are surprised at how intimate and personal our communication feels compared to the rushed and fragmented experiences they had in traditional clinics.

Whether it’s being able to email a question and get a thoughtful response, or calling our office and speaking to someone who knows them by name, the message is clear: when we reduce stress for our patients, we’re already supporting their healing.

2.  Time Is Medicine

Some of our patients who have been with us from the start may feel that long, unrushed visits are just “how it’s always been”—but for me, as a physician, this is a radical shift.

I’ve always wanted to give patients the time they needed, but under the old system, I was constantly racing the clock, stressed that I was running behind even as I was doing my best to listen and support each person.

Now, because longer appointments are built into our model by design, I no longer feel that tension. That’s a gift—for both of us.

3.  Better Conversations Lead to Better Diagnoses

With more time together, we’re able to dig deeper.

Over the past two years, one of the most striking shifts has been our ability to uncover and treat previously undiagnosed sleep issues—often a missing link in someone’s journey to better health.

Whether managing diabetes, thyroid disease, or adrenal imbalance, we now have the breathing room to explore lifestyle choices that truly move the needle.

The results we’re seeing are undeniable: better sleep is helping our patients achieve better overall health.

4.  Less Red Tape, More Results

Ironically, stepping away from insurance has allowed us to serve our patients better—even when it comes to dealing with insurance.

Because I now have more time and direct control over the administrative process, we’re seeing faster turnaround and greater success with prior authorizations. That means fewer delays, fewer disruptions to care, and greater peace of mind for our patients.

Yes, we’re out of network—but we’re also in your corner.

5.  Physician, Heal Thyself

Three years ago, I was on the edge of burnout. I seriously considered leaving medicine altogether—not because I stopped caring for my patients, but because I felt I was spending more time serving insurance companies than serving you.

Today, I feel reconnected to the calling that brought me to medicine in the first place. I sleep seven hours a night. I move my body regularly. I enjoy time with my kids. I eat with intention. In short, I live the same balanced lifestyle I encourage my patients to pursue—and I’m better able to support others because of it.

As a physician and someone living with Type 1 diabetes, I know firsthand how powerful it is to take your own doctor’s advice. Today, I finally can.
