Thyroid Cancer Awareness

September is dedicated to raising awareness about thyroid cancer, a term that often strikes fear. However, understanding this condition is crucial.

The thyroid, resembling a butterfly, is a vital gland in the throat that regulates heart rate, body temperature, metabolism, and blood calcium levels.  Last year, over 43,000 people in the US are expected to be diagnosed with thyroid cancer, but the 5-year survival rate is reassuringly high at 98.5%.

Papillary thyroid cancer is the most prevalent, making up roughly 85% of cases, and is highly treatable when detected early.

Types and Diagnosis:

There are four primary types of thyroid cancer: Papillary, Follicular, Medullary, and Anaplastic. Papillary is the most common and it is highly treatable if caught early.

Detecting thyroid cancer involves several methods:

  1. Physical exam: Physicians check your neck for thyroid changes, such as nodules, and inquire about radiation exposure and family history.
  2. Blood tests: These measure thyroids stimulating hormone (TSH) and thyroid hormone levels, providing insight into thyroid health.
  3. Ultrasound imaging: High-frequency sound waves create images of the thyroid and nearby lymph nodes, aiding cancer assessment.
  4. Biopsy: Using ultrasound guidance, a tissue sample is taken from the thyroid nodule for analysis at a pathology lab.

Treatment may not be immediately needed for small cases, and active surveillance is an option.
